Have you ever heard about SWOT analysis? These four letters are quite familiar for most business owners. Being aware of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats, it is possible to plan for future. It is not very reasonable to make any future plans without being aware of current performance. Problems in business may turn into real disasters. It is sold easy to lose competitive advantage while it may take months and even years to restore it. SWOT analysis addresses problems and benefits both inside and outside the company. This makes SWOT extremely popular since it offers information that can be used in strategic planning. Let's start with company strengths. At first call it should be noted that strengths refer to internal environment. In other words, this is what makes a company solid and strong. When performing SWOT analysis it is necessary to be realistic. For example, if company employees never come late to work this can be hardly considered a serious strength. It is crucial to select things that really matter and influence company performance.

Weaknesses also refer to internal environment. This is what makes company vulnerable and may cause problems in future. Lack of communication between departments, no feedback between top management and ordinary front line managers, slow decision-making process are typical examples of weaknesses. Like in case with the strengths, it is necessary to consider really significant flaws in operational strategic management. The example with employee lateness can also be applied here. This is a serious problem but it can be hardly considered company weakness.

Opportunities are in the field of external environment. These are positive things and factors that can make or already making company successfully withstand tough competition. Opportunities become possible if company has strengths. In other words, every business become successful upon taking advantage of own strengths. Just outlining opportunities is not enough. It is necessary to take advantage of them otherwise numerous competitors in the market will do that.

To threats we refer all negative external factors that can have a negative impact on company position or competitive advantage in the market. Threats may not be dependent on market participants. For example, changes in the national economy or international markets can be considered serious threats. Like in case with the opportunity is it is not enough to outline and threats but it is necessary to work out response actions to protect the company from these threats.

By designing SWOT metrics company top management and business owners will have reliable and one-time information on company position in the internal and external environments. Besides SWOT information should be definitely used in future and strategic planning.
