The business scorecard is one of the many tools used by different companies around the world to ensure the success of their ventures. Companies use this tool to shape their strategies in order to better achieve their goals and objectives. A few decades ago, corporations and companies have not heard about metrics at all. In fact, this tool was not even created back then. It was just quite recently that people began to acknowledge the importance of such scorecards. As what we said earlier, the scorecard is a very important management tool that ensures the productivity and growth of the company as a whole. Any organization will always have goals and objectives, whether the organization is for-profit or non-profit by nature. An organization's goals are often summed up by its mission and vision. These are for every employee to see, from the rank and file to the upper management level. This is the main purpose of scorecards or metrics. It is to ensure that everyone in the organization is striving to achieve the organization's mission and vision. Creating this tool is not easy to do. Although it is easy to build a set of metrics for a particular department, it is not that easy if you want to profile your scorecard for the whole organization. We all know that each department is different from the other. However, there must be uniformity with each department's scorecards in order to be fair to everyone and to ensure that all personnel in the organization are going in the same direction and at the same pace. Each company has its own style on how to make their metrics system. One may choose to hold a summit where representatives from each department can air their specific concerns before an actual scorecard is finalized and approved. There are also other companies that just let the departments heads meet and finalize the balanced scorecard. Whatever style they may choose, the important thing is that all concerns are aired first so that changes can be made for everyone to approve. There are some companies that use more than five key performance indicators in their scorecards. This would sound ideal but in reality, it is not recommended because you will have to watch out for so many factors. The recommended number of KPIs is just give. This is to ensure proper control of your scoring system. If you are not sure about what KPIs to include in your metrics, you can always visit the web and browse for the many different templates available. There are indeed many examples to choose from. However, you will have to create your own template since the ones available on the web should just serve as your guide. Before creating your own, you have to consider the different perspectives you will have to utilize. We already talked about the company's and the employees' perspective. The last important factor in any good metric system is the perspective of the customer. After all, customers make companies successful. Therefore, an effective business scorecard should cover all aspects, including the side of the consumers.
