Implementation of Balanced Scorecard is a lengthy and complex process. It is very difficult to achieve success without having prior experience and knowledge. Is it possible to implement Balanced Scorecard without using services of BSC consulting companies? There is probably no universal answer to this question. Every BSC experience is different, and so are success factors and reasons for failures. Something that works for one company can ruin another. Balanced Scorecard should be in no way considered a universal treatment for all problems in business. There are many companies that view BSC as a tool that substitutes strategy and makes decisions on its own. Those who want to succeed with BSC implementation should always remember just one thing: Balanced Scorecard will never act and make decisions instead of top management! This article will give a few BSC recommendations for top managers who are already using Balanced Scorecard or just thinking about BSC implementation.

Tip #1. No strategy - no results. Balanced Scorecard transforms strategy into action. To be more precise, it shows the ways to do that. Consequently, if a company has no strategy Balanced Scorecard will be useless. Of course, it is possible to use Balanced Scorecard as an accounting or control management tool, but these are not primary purposes which BSC is meant to serve. Strategy development is a crucial part of BSC implementation as the choice of key performance indicators and adjustments in reporting and feedback systems directly depend on what the company is driving at. If there are no goals or in case goals were wrongly set, then what is the point in BSC use? The company will fail anyway! As already said above, Balanced Scorecard is often thought to substitute strategy. No BSC software will create a comprehensive strategy without active participation of top managers and BSC consultants. It is not a fully automated tool that yields immediate results. This takes us to the second tip.

Tip #2. BSC Works in the long term. If the goal of a company is to sell a certain amount of products and get fast cash, then Balanced Scorecard is perhaps not the kind of tool to be used for these purposes. Strategy must be developed for 2-5 years. There are so many factors to be taken into account to achieve success in the long term, and Balanced Scorecard helps bring them together in an easy to understand and comprehensive form - strategy maps. One of the greatest advantages of Balanced Scorecard is its flexibility. External business environment is constantly changing and thus any company should respond to external challenges by introducing changes inside the company. Balanced Scorecard can be adjusted in accordance with new market conditions, appearance of a new strong rival, changes in economic situation etc.

Tip #3. Balanced Scorecard as a daily religion for the entire company. Balanced Scorecard shows its true power only when everyone in the company understands his or her contribution to implementation of strategic goals. This to say that every employee should be aware of how his/her work influences company performance. That is why, BSC is to be used on all managerial and production levels of a company.
