This is like driving a car or a bicycle without being aware of where you going and where you're now. Sooner or later you will drive off the road or get into accident. This comparison is just perfect for strategic planning and strategic management. Indeed, if company owners and top management are not aware of where they are going they have very few chances to succeed. Strategic planning is not about setting short-term goals to get fast cash. This is anticipation of possible problems and solving them even before they occurred. Strategic planning is about answering a question "Where will we be in several years?" Most business experts agree that it is impossible to survive in the modern business world without having a comprehensive, realistic but at the same time ambitious strategy. However, it should be noted that it's impossible to move on without being totally ignorant on existing problems, position of the company in external and internal environment, its relations with society and government etc. One has to be aware of strengths and weaknesses in order to make any future plans, otherwise there are many chances that such a company will most certainly fail having overestimated own strength. Thus, prior analysis is extremely important before implementation of any strategy. PEST analysis is known as one of the most popular and yet effective in the business area. PEST stands for Political, economical, social and technological factors that either directly or indirectly influence company performance. Thus, these factors should be taken into consideration when designing strategy plans. PEST gives a full characteristic of company position in relation to various factors and environments. No company can run business in isolation, and that is why it is impossible to claim that your company is free of such influences. Now let's review every factor of PEST analysis. Political. No matter what you might say, but politics directly influences economics. Thus, a business for a company is dependent on political situation, political decisions by government officials, statements and declarations of the political leaders etc. Underestimation of this factor may result in huge losses and wrongful decisions. Thus, many companies have own analytical departments that evaluate political situation and consequences of political decisions for big business. This especially concerns countries with unstable political situation, frequent discharges of government etc. Economical. This is perhaps one of the most important factors. No business can be prosperous and profitable in unfavorable economic situation and conditions and the country. So, economic situation has to be taken into account. Why? For example, before launch of some expensive product the company should evaluate customer purchasing power. In simple words, people must have money to four by certain products. Social. Similar to politics, business cannot function independently from society. Thus all social trends and preferences need to be taken into account in order to deliver customers the kind of products they really need. Technological. Those who lag behind in terms of newest technologies are doomed to fail, whatsoever business they run. Billions of dollars are spent in research and development by major companies in various industries. If you are interested in PEST customers, check this link to find out more about PEST customers.
