The difference between strategy maps and presentation of short-term goals lies in the fact that strategy maps show cause and effect ties between measures and categories of Balanced Scorecard. As known, there are four BSC categories, namely financial, customer, internal business processes, learning and growth. All categories are interrelated which means that accomplishments and positive results obtained in one category directly depend on accomplishment and positive results in the other categories. For instance, to increase sales volumes one has to improve relations with customers, by offering cheap and quality products the production which is only possible through improvement of personnel knowledge and skills. In this example we have demonstrated ties between the four categories. The greatest benefit of strategy maps is that even ordinary personnel without profound knowledge and experience in strategic planning can actually understand what the company's driving at and what needs to be done to accomplish goals. Thus, almost everyone in the company understands his/her role in the business which improves self motivation, as well as individual and group performance.
