Just like in a commercial business, universities compete to win loyalty of school graduates. As known, a strategy it is not just a pile of presentations, graphs and charts. Strategy should be put into action otherwise there is no point in development it in the first place. This primarily concerns universities that should always focus on improvement of education quality and students satisfaction. These days, universities actively use performance evaluation systems to measure progress of strategic goals implementation. Balanced Scorecard is known as one of the most popular and famous strategic management and performance evaluation tools used both in commercial and noncommercial sector such as educational area. In this article will talk about university scorecards, their components and useful features.

Traditionally, Balanced Scorecard consists of four categories: financial, customer, internal processes, learning and growth. This four category model mainly refers to commercial scorecards. You may ask "Who are customers in educational establishments?" The answer is quite easy. These are students who pay money to get education. Naturally, students want to get the most value for their money while universities want to maintain a positive image and excellent reputation. Measurement of university performance will help managers and deans to locate weak points and problems in order to solve them before they grow into catastrophes. Besides, Balanced Scorecard measures efficiency of selected ways to achieve strategic goals.

BSC works through evaluation of key performance indicators, which are specifically selected measures that demonstrate progress or regress of a company (university in our case) in terms of implementation of strategic goals. The right choice of key performance indicators is a serious precondition for overall Balanced Scorecard success. What are typical key performance indicators for education area?

Without any doubt, national accreditation is a very important factor influencing both performance and image of the university. Through evaluation of such key performance indicator as percentage nationally accredited programs vs. total number of programs in the university it is possible to assess efficiency of the decisions to start such programs.

Satisfaction of government evaluators with the university is also extremely important. As known, every higher educational establishment has to go through national accreditation and evaluation in order to confirm its high status. Regular measurement of this KPI will help university management make the right decisions as to further development and expansion.

As to students' satisfaction, this key performance indicator needs no discussion. Students have to be satisfied with the curriculum, extracurricular opportunities, learning campus facilities etc. Satisfied students are usually the best students in the university. Positive studying results benefit both university management and students themselves.
