An active management strategy map can guide a portfolio manager in making the correct decisions as where to place his investments. It would contain the end goal, the methods to be used, and the resources that are involved. It gives a portfolio focus and may provide an advantageous edge over the competition.

Active management is a strategy used in portfolio management. A portfolio manager purposely invests his stocks to the specific goal of surpassing an investment benchmark index. This means that he invests in order to create an investment return larger than the benchmark index sometimes with an added reduction in risks.

Strategy maps are visual manifestations of the goals or mission of a company or project. In active management, strategy map is supposed to assist the portfolio manager in investing wisely in order to gain an advantageous investment return. A strategy map often outlines the strategy objectives often medium term goals being pursued and the future strategies that could be taken to pursue the long term mission.

There are a variety of strategy maps that could be used for active management. Some of these maps may include the key performance indicators of a business. Balanced scorecards could be used to maintain the direction the manager has deemed most profitable.

An active management strategy map plots out the various actions and objectives that need to be taken and pursued in order to guarantee success. It is a project strategy map because it has a specific goal to be achieved which is increasing investment returns that would surpass the benchmark index.

Much of the success of an actively managed account lies on the skills of the manager and the research done on the potential investments. There is always a possibility than actively managed account could underperform. This means that the manager of an active management account should posses the necessary skills and accurate research information in order to make the most advantageous investments. An active management strategy map could guarantee this and, perhaps in a way reduce the risk index. A strategy map could actually prevent a portfolio manager from making a decision that could ruin his client's performance index.

Active management can occur in two ways, one is by purchasing undervalued securities and the other is through the selling of overvalued stocks. Knowing when to make the decision as to where the portfolio will go can be charted on the strategy map. It is therefore important to know exactly what the portfolio needs and when to act upon market potentials.

An active management strategy map would keep help the portfolio going in the right directions and making an advantageous investment instead of allowing it to enter the latest risk heavy investment trend. A strategy map keeps the objectives of the project in constant view. Each action that would be taken and decision made would be in coordination with the end result the strategy wants to achieve.

The stock market is a risky place to do business, and for managers pursuing an actively managed account, a strategy map might come in handy. A well thought out active management strategy map might just be able to guide the portfolio account into surpassing the set benchmark index.
