There are many ways on how you can create a dashboard that contains all the information you need to determine how well your business is going. One of them is through the use of the performance stop light. This is quite similar to the traffic light which is why it can be called so as well. These contain three colors which are apparently red, green and yellow or amber. Since this is comparable to the lights that guide people during traffic on the streets, they are often used by organizations so that they will know when they should proceed and stop. Decision making has never been easy with these lights.

Depending on the company, there are different traffic light systems for the performance indicators. However, it is common that the management will choose green to represent the good health of the company while red is for some bad news. Amber on the other hand can be a depiction that there is a need to make a new decisions or that the business is currently in an okay state. Green is therefore the most favorable color in the performance stop light. There are also some organizations that add another color in the set such as blue.

The KPI traffic light is often utilized to measure the progress of the project or the organization in general. In order to gauge the success of the business, there is a need to first identify which areas should be considered as critical. While most of the divisions are essential, there should be a limit in the number of indicators that will be used. The number of KPIs will vary from one company to another particularly on the size. Generally large companies have five up to ten indicators while small ones can settle for three to five KPIs.

Among the areas that should definitely be measured are the experiences of the employees, leadership and governance, financial health of the company, human resources and the staff, employee diversity, commercialization, excellence in researches and income coming from the studies. In order to determine the health of the company, the definitions for the traffic light system for the key performance indicators will once again depend on the preferences of the KPI team or the executives themselves.

The meaning of each color should be specified so that the reviewers or the managers will be able to identify how healthy the present project is even by merely glancing at the performance stop light. Frequently, the neutral color white is often utilized to present the previous and the current state of the organization. For green, this will show that the company is in good health which means that there is almost no risks begin faced, the organization is on track and that there are no actions required at the moment. Amber-green is for satisfactory, which denotes that there are presently some concerns but everything is broadly on track. If it is fully amber, there could be medium risk in the business as there are some important concerns that should be taken care of. Red means problematic, which means that the performance is poor.
