One will not have an idea what airports should be like if one does not travel often. However, many travelers have experienced bad customer service, not only in relation to dealing with inept airport crew members, but also in consideration of the actual processes of the airport. For this reason, the management team of airports should have an objective way of measuring whether the service the airport provides is at par with the current standard. This means there is someone there that should develop an airport scorecard that will allow the management to measure what is effective and what is not. Since customers are the bloodline of every airport, it is imperative that developments and benchmarking processes should be done incessantly to keep up with the times. There may be a lot of things that can be improved and measured out there. A study using statistical analysis will show the management the major pain points of an airport. From this statistical study, a scorecard may be derived and later on improved as well. From a financial perspective, the airport management may measure income generating activities and fees by looking at the fees charged. One of these is the aircraft landing fee. This is the fee that airports charge for aircrafts that land on the airport. It is not sure if all aircrafts are charged for emergency landings. Perhaps not at all. Another aspect that may be looked into in airport management in terms of finances is the overall budget or expenses for operations. As in any business, there will be operating costs because a company has to pay its workers, the electricity and other utilities, repairs, maintenance, etc. Management should look and drill down on expenses that are not necessary, and then cut down on these expenses to efficiently manage the airport. On another aspect, security is one of the most important things that need managing and efficiency. Other than the manual security checks that passengers experience, there has to be electronic devices put in place to ensure security, not only of the passengers, but the employees, too. Occurrences such as hi-jacks and terrorist attacks in the past should be enough to serve as learning experiences. Other than frisking, it will be helpful if there are scanners and x-rays available in the airport. Other than this, security computers should be there to check whether passports are valid or not. This way, criminals will not have a chance of crossing the border. Many more metrics may be included in measuring the efficiency of an airport, such as cleanliness, emergency preparation, ground noise level, passenger comfort, waiting areas, and other facilities, and so on. The list can go on forever but then, what the managers should look into is the necessary aspects of the airport that contributes greatly to its operations and income. This is the best way to develop an airport scorecard by which processes will be measured and eventually improved. After all, there is always room for improvement in any business and industry.
