Being able to switch keyboard layouts will greatly benefit users, as it will make encoding and typing tasks more convenient to do. Check additional information about switch keyboard layouts.

Many PC users still do not know that they can opt to switch keyboard layouts to make them more efficient in typing and encoding.

In the context of computing, the word "keyboard" refers to an arrangement of keys or buttons. Characters are printed or engraved on keys of keyboards. Each of the keys correspond to a certain written symbol. The keys are pressed and sometimes held for a few seconds, in sequence or simultaneously, to produce certain symbols. A keyboard layout, meanwhile, refers to how the keys of a keyboard are arranged in terms of mechanical, functional, and visual layout. Mechanical layout refers to the physical placements and shapes of keys on the keyboard. Functional layout, on the other hand, refers to how key-meaning associations of keyboard's keys are placed depending on the software used to determine this. Finally, a visual layout refers to the arrangement of markings or legends on the keys of a keyboard.

There are different keyboard layouts available today. This variety can be attributed to the fact that people need accessibility to different symbols in the course of writing using different languages. Moreover, specialized keyboard layouts also exist for use by professionals in the fields of accounting, computer programming, and mathematics. Keyboard layouts that are commonly used today were actually designed during the era of the mechanical typewriters. Because of this, their ergonomics have so much to do with the technical limitations of the early typewriters. Back in those days, letters were connected to levers that would have to be moved freely every time a typewriter key is pressed. To prevent the levers from jamming, the letters were arranged in such a way that commonly used letters were not too close to another. Christopher Sholes is credited for inventing the QWERTY layout. When computers were first developed, the QWERTY layout had become the de facto standard in the layout of keyboards.

Another popular keyboard layout is the Dvorak layout that was invented by Dr. August Dvorak back in the 1930s. It was designed for efficiency and speed. Moreover, it was invented with the purpose of decreasing finger fatigue and increasing typing speed. In this layout, all vowels are placed in the left portion of the home row, while commonly used consonants are placed on the right portion of the same row. Because of this arrangement, there is less need to reach far for other letters. Nevertheless, it might require a little getting used to, if you have been using the QWERTY keyboard layout for a long time.

Nevertheless, if you want more flexibility in your keyboard layout, you can use a keyboard layout manager to create and modify existing layout files. Typically, a keyboard manager features a main keyboard window that contains a standard keyboard layout. From here, you can select key combinations that are more compatible to your typing or encoding tasks. An assignment list is available for quick-reference to existing key combination assignments. Nevertheless, with this utility, you can switch keyboard layouts with just a few strokes of your keyboard.
