The effect of synchronizing directories is exactly as implied by the name of the activity itself. Synchronizing two directories would be just like merging both of them, thereby resulting to a single location or directory that would then contain all of the files that were both contained in the two old ones. As a result, all of the files would then be combined into a single directory. For a brief analogy into the matter, it would be like there are 5 people having a meeting in Room 1 and then another 5 people doing the same in Room 2. Since Room 3 has enough room for all 10 people and it would make more sense for all of them to have the meeting together, then Room 3 would then be the resultant directory containing all 10 people.

The great thing about this command is the fact that there are actually no files being deleted when the merging starts. When you do the usual copy/paste command, if your destination directory has identical files or documents, either the original or the new one would have to be deleted before synchronization takes place. Well, you would not have to delete it per se, but you would still have to overwrite one file over the other. In synchronizing directories, this does not take place at all. The process is quite simple and is all about content replacement. Synchronization implies that there are two documents becoming a single one. All the files would then be retained in the resultant directory.

Upon performing this command, your source directory would be merged with destination one. The contents of the former directory would then be moved into the latter. Should there be any identity issues, these would be resolved efficiently. This is quite convenient, especially when you are thinking of synchronizing all of your files contained in more than one computer.

When you perform this function, all that needs to be done is to copy a source directory folder right into the destination directory. A popup would then display, stating you have an identical folder existing in your destination. Just click the option that enables merging both directories into a single directory and you are all set.
