Kpi business criteria or key performance indicators business criteria are also widely known as key success indicators (KSI). Kpi business criteria are created for the purpose of measuring and defining the progress that an organization has made when in terms of getting towards its stated goals and objectives. Whenever any business concern undergoes a process of analyzing its own missions and objectives, meaning those who carry a stake in that mission and stating the goals that the organization wants to achieve will help the business define how it will be measuring the progress it makes towards achieving those goals. This measurement of business progress is known as Kpi business criteria.

There are a number of characteristics of Kpi business criteria that you need to keep in mind when selecting them. The very first thing you need to know is that Kpi business criteria are not the goals themselves. Rather they are simply a form of quantifiably measuring process which is agreed upon in advance and indicates whether or not a business is making substantial progress towards achieving its goals. This is one of the biggest reasons why it is extremely important to determine the goads before setting the Kpi business criteria. For instance, a business may have an objective to become the most profitable business in that particular niche it deals in. in this context, the Kpi business criteria would be all the factors including the financial as well as the profit measurements. A good Kpi business criteria will indicate in this instance would be shareholders equity or the amount of pre-tax profit the organization has earned in the financial year or quarter. On the other hand, using "cost of sales" would not be a good kpi since it is unable to indicate a way for measuring the goal of the business.

The next thing a business should keep in mind is not select more than 3 or 5 Kpi business criteria at any single point in time. The basic concept here is to focus the attention on the measurements of the organizational goals. However, even if the overall company limits itself to 3 or 4 Kpi business criteria for reflecting what progress it has made towards reaching the goals of the company, the geographical units may also have a separate goal other that the 3 or 4 Kpi business criteria selected above. These goals need not be the same as the overall goal of the company. However, they should override the company goals.

The Kpi business criteria must be preset. It would literally be a worthless exercise of trying to set a goal that has already been achieved only to say that the goal has been successfully met. In the same way, if the company is unable to tell if it has been able to meet the goals or not, it would again be pointless. Both, the goal as well as the Kpi business criteria should be determined jointly and identified before the start of a new period.

Overall, even if the goals may be defined narrowly sometimes, the Kpi business criteria should not change significantly during the process of achieving the goal.
