They concentrated on the five brand models from five of the leading cell phone companies in the US. The data that they have then gathered from an online forum was used. The forum consisted of more than 8 million posts. Each of these online conversations were used and analyzed to see how customer behaviour related to the data. This then led them to examining how online conversations can be related to corporate performance. Based on the research they were able to conduct, Krishnamurthi and his team were able to classify the comments people made in three different ways. The first is an action-type statement which indicates a person's willingness to purchase the product. The second type depicts emotion as expressed by people who 'hate' the product. Lastly, the third category is categorized by attribute-type statements which correlated to the product's quality, functionality and aesthetics. Each of these comments found on forums can either be negative or positive. After this data was gathered, they were then used on a specially designed software which would allow researchers to rate each action, attribute, and emotional statements on a scale. This software program has its own dictionary. And because of this, all posts which have been made can automatically be classified by the software.
