Most of the balanced scorecards today that work are those that have key performance indicators. These KPIs are the ones that help in determining the status of the business. If you are monitoring the health of your company, it is best that you make use of these indicators so that you can really see how well your business is going. Now, there are many ways on how you can design the BSC with the KPIs. One of which is through the use of performance stop lights. These stop lights are comparable to the traffic lights that we see across the streets today. They are utilized in order for the business executives to completely monitor the position of the company with regards to the health of the project, the satisfaction of the customers, the efficiency of the processes and the ranking of the development of the organization.

When you make use of the performance stop lights, you will be able to get the results at a glance. This means that you can easily see the problem areas in the company without having to read what is on the report. From the colors that you perceive, you will be able to track down those that have difficulty in meeting the targets that you have set. Typically, the performance stop lights are being exploited in order for the user to verify that an area in the company is achieving the desired results or if it has already exceeded the predefined goals of that particular spot. Of course, this is also utilized so that you can find out whether you are failing to meet the specified objectives of the company. This way, you will have the opportunity to correct the mistakes and eventually make the right decision so that you can still control the situation and not worsen it.

As mentioned the performance stop lights are similar to the traffic lights due to the fact that they employ icons that have the same color as the lights that are used to manage the street traffic. Depending on the company, they will have their own definitions of which colors they will use in the stop light for the indicators. However, it is common that yellow is utilized when the goal is being attained, green is for those who have gone beyond the expectations and red is for the critical areas or those that have fell short in achieving the objectives.

When you make the performance indicator report, make sure that you have specified what each color represents. This way, it will be easier for those who are reading the results to interpret them. At a single glance, one will be able to tell whether they are succeeding in their venture or not. If they are not, they will immediately find a way in order for them to maintain their value in the industry and also acquire a solution for every problem that they encounter. You will be able to quickly and easily keep track the health of the organization by means of comparing the current status with the goals that you have set for your business.
