Benchmarking is the procedure wherein one will be able to determine who or what is the best, the standard setter and what exactly that standard is. For instance, you can argue which among the historical figures is the bet one for you. You can also use an objective measure wherein you will compare different people like Napoleon and Genghis Khan. This is also the same in business. One will have to determine which among the companies is the best when it comes to sales or find out which has the best department for customer service. Everything can be compared because there are tons of competitions that are out and about. This is why alignment benchmark should be understood by business owners.

It is a popular line of saying that there is a need for organizations to make sure that their goals and strategies are properly aligned. The question is how do they do this? By setting alignment benchmark, one will be able to quantify the standards associated with business alignment. To answer the question, it is important that a person knows just why he needs to perform benchmarking. What you need to bear in mind is that you cannot compare yourself or your company against something when you do not even know what the standard is. It is not always about your company. There are other organizations established to vie for the attention of the customers with you. This is why you also need to know how your competitions are doing. This does not only mean that you will observe how they perform in the market but also with the products, services and innovations that they are offering to the public.

There is also a need for you to know what you can benchmark in the first place. You may be aware that the prime area wherein benchmarking was applied was in manufacturing. Then when this method became successful, other departments followed suit. Now it has turned into a popular management tool that can be used no matter what department or division your company has. Therefore, you are the only one who can decide what you should and should not benchmark. An important reminder is that you should benchmark the ones that matter. Of course they can include the performance of the employees, customer satisfaction, sales and others.

After you have decided which among the aspects you will benchmark, you can proceed to determining how you will be measuring them. There is not really a set of rules on how you should measure them but just make sure that they are appropriate. Alignment benchmark should keep your goals and strategies supporting one another since this is what this subject is all about. In this case, you will need to set up goals first and then try to check what kind of strategy will fit them. From here, you will not only be able to come to the realization of your goals but you will also be determine which among the techniques can be considered as the best practice for a certain activity.
