No matter what area in your company you would like to start the metrics development particularly for the product metrics, there is a need to undergo a process that is quite challenging. The risk often starts at the beginning. However, if you keep some things in mind, you will be able to come up with the best metrics that will prove to be quite efficient for your company. The first stage in metrics development is when you take note of the significant qualities of good metrics. They should be simple, kept to a minimum, based upon the business objectives and they should be practical. The latter means that you should avoid those metrics that require you to get additional data, which might lead you to exerting more effort and exhaustive data collection. There are also different types of metrics. For instance, in product metrics, you will have to include process, program project, product an enterprise metrics. These can often be seen in the balanced scorecard of the company. Now, the next step is to get to know the definitions that are involved in the metrics development. Among the terms that you will encounter here are dashboards, scorecard, key performance indicators and measures. Let us take them briefly. The dashboard is a tool that is utilized by the managers to monitor the performance of the business. This has a visual interface which can include graphs, stoplights, color coded calculations and other cues. Meanwhile, the scorecard is the content of the dashboard, which has the collection of different measures that will determine whether the company is successful or not. The KPIs are often known as the metrics but metrics are not often considered as an indicator. Another thing that will confuse you is the measures, which are also differentiated with the metrics. After you have fully understood what the definitions are, you will now undergo the process of developing the metrics. What you have to remember here is that teamwork matters. Make sure that everyone in the company gets to know about the metrics and how it will be utilized in the entire organization. This will eventually increase the success of the metrics development. Then, you will have to settle the corporate strategy as you have chosen the team for metrics development. You can also choose a facilitator who will supervise the creation, deployment and the execution of the metrics in the company. After everything is done and you have completed the metrics set, you are now ready to organize them. It is important here that you cascade the metrics so that every department and division in the organization is taken into concern. Do not believe that the metrics should only be exploited at the higher levels of the business because those that are in the lower portions are the ones that make heavy work. In this case, they have to be motivated well in order for them to exert their best efforts in achieving the goals of the company.
