The BSC or the balanced scorecard can actually be implemented in just about any industry. Medicine, aviation, even law. Yes, there is such a thing termed as a law BSC or a law balanced scorecard. And this tool is gaining much acceptance when it comes to its function of promoting legal practices and measuring both success and failure in the industry.

Just like any other business or enterprise, profit is still the primary agenda of any law firm. No matter how noble a law firm's intentions may be, even if a firm sets out to defend the oppressed and the needy pro bono, it still would not be able to continue its operations without earning enough money as salary for its lawyers. Whatever is left after profit has been disbursed to the lawyers, that amount would then be divided amongst the partners. There is also that fact if a law firm is not earning enough, this might be an indication of performance that is not really that desirable to begin with.

As a managerial tool, the balanced scorecard that is used in the context of law gives the firm the opportunity to earn profit. For the most part, companies would focus on the major performance areas that have a direct impact on the attainment of their goals and objectives. These major areas include internal processes, finance, and efficiency. For law firms, on the other hand, the most important major area is learning and growth. This particular area or perspective is closely related to another equally important performance area, which is customer service.

The learning and growth perspective entails the development of a team of lawyers that handle a wide variety of cases with a level of efficiency that encourage their clients to return to them as well as make referrals. This tool features a system that can assess the professional skills and theoretical knowledge of all the lawyers that belong to the firm. What is better about this system is that it is very systematic and objective. This assessment will then be used to match skills with the appropriate jobs, thereby ensuring higher success rate when it comes to handling the cases brought to the firm by clients.

The staff development program is also an essential and this should have the assessment results as its bases. This program is designed to fill the gap between knowledge and skills of the lawyers themselves and those that are required when handling the cases that have been assigned to them. You see, a law office does not handle all sorts of legal cases. For instance, a law firm that specializes on civil cases would turn down a case that is criminal in nature. Thus, there has to be a comprehensive development program suited to the specialization of the law firm itself.

The finance aspect, on the other hand, involves the use of financial tools designed to provide better allocation of the firm's resources. These include collection policies, disbursement policies, budget projections, documentation, and procedures. The internal process, meanwhile, involves all activities implemented to enhance the overall performance of the firm. And the last key performance area, the customer, pertains to the clients, of course. Any law firm is out to portray a clean-cut public image. Excellent service is a must and having a positive image will certainly pull in more clients.

All of these should be plotted out on the law BSC. There may be various differences as to the metrics or key performance indicators being used but they would still be, more or less, similar in nature. This is in the sense that the indicators are used to enhance the performance of the law firm.
