Having a balanced scorecard is not enough for there are a lot of BSC management problems that will get thrown in your way from time to time. Usually, these BSC management problems arise if the BSC is not thought through, often an outcome of rushing things. Do not forget that you should not take for granted the simple core concepts of a balanced scorecard. These four concepts are:

1.Importance of interdependence - While the financial aspect of a business is an important note, the inter-locking of other areas to support it will lift the entire organization as a whole.

2.Forward looking - Future planning for future events through the use of past and present performance measurements will allow business owners to foresee what they might need or even become in the near future.

3.Communication - This is a vital part for an organization is impossible to survive if a "one-man army" idea will stay afloat. It is important to convey all business-related data in order for staff and personnel to assess what they have to do to achieve the central goal.

4.Four key dimensions measuring - It is crucial to always use the four key dimensions of a BSC (Financial, Customer Services, Internal Processes and Growth and Development area) in measuring performance.

Whether you are a starter or is already past the phase of developing a balanced scorecard, there are a lot of potential BSC management problems that you will most likely encounter. It is safe to say that failure in managing a balanced scorecard is like failing your entire enterprise . Below are the most common BSC management problems that both new and old users face:

-Poorly developed strategy is one of the main BSC management problems as this is the reason why some balanced scorecards appear vacuous and confusing. Make sure to spend a decent amount of time analyzing your business strategy before application.

-Avoid centralized measures by ensuring that all areas in your organization are involved in the BSC process. Give them freedom to suggest or to develop their own objectives and views, as long as it is related to the central goal.

-Another common of the many BSC management problems is the lack of integration. A BSC is not a stand-alone project so make sure that you incorporate a range of disparate systems, measures and monitoring approaches.

-Providing just a single scorecard for the entire organization is obviously not enough. Make sure that each area has their own BSC and explain to them how it is going to benefit them as employees.

-As every organization's strategy changes, so does every element of a BSC. An outdated balanced scorecard will add more liability rather than benefits.

-An organization should act accordingly based on the results of the BSC, whether positive or negative. One of the common BSC management problems is how they fail to try to exceed their records (in terms of positive results specifically) because they think they already did good.

-Just because "it does not say on the scorecard" does not mean that you cannot do anything else. Stay as flexible as possible and if you think it is going to help you achieve your central goal and you have thought it through, there is no need to go by the book.

-In the learning and growth dimension, one of the most common BSC management problems is failure to look at reality. Embrace what the real world is and use it to develop more effective solutions.
