Is it difficult to manage inn? As known, inns do not look like hotels. Inns are rather countryside houses (or maybe private houses located in the city) that offer the same atmosphere as you would have at home. Inns guests can enjoy evenings at a fireplace, homemade food and attitude of inn management comparable to the way your relatives treat you when you visit them. Indeed, it is very pleasant to stay in inns since you've got the feeling that you are treated like a real guest. Sure, these days, hotels also provide the best services. But you will never get that feeling of comfort even in the best hotel. An inn can become home for a day or two. As a rule prices and rates in inns are higher than in hotels, as inns do not have many rooms and lots of personnel. Everything is done individually for you. Thus it can be quite difficult to optimize performance of an inn. It is necessary to offer competitive prices and at the same time make profits. Balanced Scorecard will certainly help solve this problem. Having set strategic goals it is possible to optimize performance, cut costs and look for new ways to get profits.

Development of inn Balanced Scorecard should certainly start with development of a strategy. To achieve that you need to answer some questions. Where do you want to be in five years? Who are your customers? Why will customers choose your inn? These are only several questions, and there are more of them. If you want to have more guests you have to evaluate current performance of an inn and find out whether or not you're ready to open doors to a larger number of customers. Obviously, in order to increase number of customers you have to retain existing regular guests and perform advertising campaign to attract more people. With Balanced Scorecard it is possible to evaluate efficiency of all measures and campaigns carried out to boost hotel performance.

The four categories of Balanced Scorecard will most certainly cover critical success factor for an inn. For example, if there are only 10 rooms in the inn, and only half of them are regularly occupied, there are two options: either to invest in advertising and attract new customers or to stop maintaining and cleaning vacant rooms. That will help you cut costs and use freed money for advertising and promotion. As soon as new customers arrive, vacant rooms can be cleaned up to be ready to be occupied by new guests.

It is also necessary to monitor cleaning costs. If such expenses are too high there are certainly ways to decrease them, for example by purchasing cheaper tools, optimizing work of cleaning personnel, trying to clean up rooms during the day when no electric light is required etc.

Through measurement of customer satisfaction you will measure own efficiency. The more customers are satisfied with staying in an inn, the better financial results are. Satisfied customers in most cases turn into regular customers.
