Read this article to learn more on BSC and its implementation stages. Check additional information about balanced scorecard design consulting. The process of Balanced Scorecard implementation is quite unique. Indeed, this is the first performance evaluation and strategic management tool that took into consideration also nonfinancial indicators. The two business gurus, Norton and Kaplan, offered to evaluate nonfinancial indicators that directly influence implementation of financial goals. The problem was that financial indicators mainly represented lagging KPIs. It means that financial accounting tells company top management of something that has already happened to the company, and thus all predictions and forecasts are based on past figures. In such a way, these forecasts are not very precise, and this makes strategic planning a challenging task. Luckily, Balanced Scorecard solved this problem with introduction of nonfinancial indicators in the three (sometimes four) categories: financial, customer, internal business processes, learning and growth. Each category evaluates a set of key performance indicators that represent critical success factors for business in various areas. It should be noted however that choice of key performance indicators is probably the most important Balanced Scorecard implementation stage. Of course, development of a comprehensive strategy is the first most important task. At the same time, if wrong KPIs are chosen the company will receive wrong information. In fact, the figures will be 100% correct but they won't represent key success factors for this particular business, take into account peculiarities of internal and external business environment, market situation, level of competition etc. That's why the right choice of key performance indicators is already half of success in implementation of Balanced Scorecard as a revolutionary and extremely effective strategic management tool that communicates operational and strategic management through evaluation of current business performance. There is nothing wrong in looking for help with key performance indicators, especially if the company is dealing with Balanced Scorecard for the first time. Without prior BSC experience it is very difficult to make the correct choice of effective indicators. Some KPIs look very representative but they are in fact secondary measures. It means that they will seem to provide top management with important information, while they are actually representing some unimportant things and processes that do not directly influence company performance and never help in implementation of strategic goals. It should be mentioned that Balanced Scorecard consulting companies as a rule have positive experience in helping huge corporations with Balanced Scorecard. External consultants have the knowledge and experience so necessary when making first steps in introduction of Balanced Scorecard to the company. Having said that, we do not try to say that company personnel should not participate in strategic planning and Balanced Scorecard discussion. Just to the contrary, the more employees are actually involved in BSC, the better the outcomes. As known, Balanced Scorecard works at its fullest potential only when it becomes part of everyday routine for virtually anyone in the company. If Balanced Scorecard is stuck on top management level and never comes down to lower managerial levels it is doomed to fail. Besides, each managerial level would have own set of key performance indicators which should be carefully picked out.
