Indeed, Balanced Scorecard has a very simple principle. It has become a revolutionary tool just because its creators Norton and Kaplan decided to measure nonfinancial indicators to evaluate company performance. Besides, Balanced Scorecard can tell whether or not the company is on the right track to implement strategic goals. It turned out that financial indicators do not tell much about what is happening in the company right now and what results should be expected. All predictions and forecasts were based on past financial results. Norton and Kaplan introduced another three categories to Balanced Scorecard the traditional model of which has four categories now: financial, customer, internal business processes, learning and growth. Each category consists of key performance indicators which are measures that evaluate company efficiency in various areas, both internal and external. Balanced Scorecard has already received a huge portion of criticism mainly from companies and top managers who had an extremely negative BSC implementation experience. Who is to blame for BSC failure? In most cases companies failed to successfully implement Balanced Scorecard due to mistakes and light minded attitude towards BSC. Some companies are using Balanced Scorecard just as management control or accounting tool while others pretend to use it for strategic management purposes, while in fact BSC remains just a formality, a pile of useless data sheets, graphs and reports. That's why, before making a final decision to start using Balanced Scorecard in a company top managers are highly recommended to test this system, for instance, on a department level, or at least download performance indicators templates and samples to get a general idea of how Balanced Scorecard works. Perhaps one of the biggest problems is to teach the entire company to live with Balanced Scorecard but not just use it as a managerial tool. Balanced Scorecard samples will make it possible for top managers and Balanced Scorecard team that will be in charge of system implementation to understand how BSC works, how it should be introduced to the company, what is the role of ordinary personnel and successful maintenance of Balanced Scorecard as well as clear up a number of very important issues. A typical Balanced Scorecard template contains graphs and tables ready to be filled with key performance indicators in the relevant categories. Sometimes Balanced Scorecard templates are supplied with ready to use sets of key performance indicators. This is an excellent opportunity for top managers to gain experience in BSC use. It is recommended just to start using BSC without making any radical decisions based on obtained results. It is important to grasp how BSC works, how it is perceived by ordinary personnel and what is more important - how employee performance influences total performance of the company. Run BSC in a "demo" mode first. However, when making a final decision on BSC implementation, top managers have to make sure they posses enough human resources and money to motivate personnel and allocate funds to maintain BSC.
