Stomatology is part of medicine concerned with the mouth and its related diseases. Originally a field practiced by physicians, it is increasingly being relegated to dentists nowadays. In Europe, stomatology is a university course that aspiring dentists need to take and pass. It is obvious that stomatologist KPI should first and foremost tell him how good he is at treating mouth problems, including oral hygiene.

Just like any other professional, stomatologists need to formulate valid criteria to assess whether the services they offer and perform are in keeping with dental health standards demanded by clients and the public in general. It is not enough that they have passed the required government agency examinations and have complied and continues to comply with regulations that allow them to practice the profession. In order to attain a modicum of success in their chosen fields, they also have to establish guide key performance indicators (KPIs) from which to base assessments of how effective they are in treating dental problems of patients and in encouraging continuous public patronage.

How do stomatologists evaluate such concerns? When it comes to the desire to be successful in activities that they engage in, professionals do not differ much from business organizations. Stomatologists are naturally motivated to do their best with the objective of providing the most efficient and effective service, which will ultimately bring them financial stability.

The professional success of stomatologists largely depends on knowledge, skills, and the ability to relate with patients. The quality of services they offer can also influenced by the equipment available to them. Establishing KPIs is not difficult because, of course, objectives are clear cut: if possible be able to effectively treat all mouth-related diseases and oral hygiene problems that come their way.

There are various mouth diseases and hygiene issues that stomatologists meet in the course of their practice. Keeping records of all cases presented with and what treatments or medications were offered and outcomes is a logical system of keeping track of patients' progress and consequently evaluating skills, capabilities, and limitations, which have impact on the number of stomatologists' patients. Another way to establish relevant KPis is to maintain inventory of business generated by recommendations from former patients.

Aside from the fact that health is a delicate area of concern, it is very important for stomatologists to be able to identify weak areas of their practice so they can apply appropriate remedies. It is not surprising that medical professionals have extensive networks designed to provide venue for sharing of experiences.

Since KPIs are measures of success or effectiveness, the primary KPIs of stomatologists should logically be: the total number of successfully treated patients vis-à-vis the total number of patient visits in a given period of time, the number of patients accommodated against total visits for lack of medical expertise or equipment essential to correct diagnosis, and the number of recommendations from former patients. Results of assessments of these KPis are good tools for identifying actions that can fill the gaps and enable stomatologists to improve their services.

Stomatologist KPIs are not rigidly fixed despite objectives that may be unchanging. There are such things as overall KPis and specific KPis that accompany detailed actions aimed at addressing similarly detailed problems. Stomatologists may find inability to keep track of patients or to keep track of latest developments in their fields as limiting factors and so are forced to give them primary importance. This will naturally mean actions with different sets of KPis.
