Balanced Scorecard has proved to be one of the most effective tools to evaluate business perofrmance in the four categories: financial, customer, internal processes, learning and grows. This article sheds light on BSC use as business assessment system. Check additional information about business performance.

Is it necessary to evaluate business performance? The answer is most certainly - yes! Business may seem profitable as long as it earns money. But have you ever thought of the ways to optimize business performance and earn even more? Have you tried to look in future and plan business activity? Have you ever tried to implement strategic goals?

In fact, one should start with definition of business performance evaluation. Every evaluation or assessment process is based on a certain standard or adopted strategic goals. In such a way company performance is evaluated against such standards or strategic goals. For example, company X planned to sell one million of products but sold only 500,000. There should be certain reasons for such a failure and business performance evaluation will help locate problems.

Balanced Scorecard is one of the most popular tools used for business performance evaluation. Moreover, this is the only performance evaluation tool that communicates operational and strategic management, or in other words puts strategy into action. Besides, Balanced Scorecard makes it possible to evaluate business performance in dynamics, but not only in the end of fiscal periods like all other performance evaluation tools. It means that company top management should not wait for a year or so to see whether or not company goals have been achieved. BSC will offer all relevant information on company progress or regress on the way to implement strategic goals.

How is this possible? It is very simple. Balanced Scorecard consists of four (sometimes more) categories, each of them having a set of key performance indicators which show how well company is doing to achieve success in certain areas. The four categories are financial, customer, internal business processes, learning and growth. Each category represents key success factors for any company in external and internal environment. Besides, all key performance indicators and categories are interrelated. It means that it is impossible to achieve positive financial results without improvements in customer relations or optimization of business processes that in their turn cannot be improved without positive changes in personnel knowledge and experience.

In such a way Balanced Scorecard draws a full picture of company performance which is called a strategy map. Every strategy map has cause and effect ties which indicate how various indicators and categories are interrelated. These cause and effect ties will certainly help top managers set the right goals and look for ways to implement them, while ordinary employees will certainly understand how they can make their contribution to implementation of strategic goals. This is Balanced Scorecard top secret, and this is why this system is so much popular. Strategy maps are easy to read and thus even lower level employees can understand what's going on in the company and were strategic goals they should achieve.

Balanced Scorecard has proved to be very effective and easy to use if properly applied. BSC has received a huge portion of criticism mainly from those top managers who failed to successfully implement Balanced Scorecard and use it in the company. However, such negative comments are due to negative experience and numerous mistakes made during implementation and maintenance process.
