Scorecarding is a popular method that is very popular especially in the business world. There are a number of reasons why you should start building a scorecard including the fact that you can obtain best in class performance in the management system. You will not only get to focus on the financial area but also in other aspects such as the customers, your employees and the processes or operations within the company. However, the most coveted advantage is that there will be a huge increase in the profitability of your company. The problem though is that it is not that easy to create the BSC along with the balanced scorecard indicators that you will be using. You need to properly deploy the BSC, select the right measures to utilize, provide the support that is needed, use systematic approach, obtain well defined measures, influence all the business levels, generate a sense of urgency, obtain significant results particularly in the internal part of ht business and set the goals. All of these are required in order for you to start building a scorecard.

The number one priority in building a scorecard is to drive change into the organization. Good changes are what the companies want. A successful scorecard is comparable to the dashboard that you see on the cockpit. This is because it should provide you with the most useful information and feedback in real time. Thus, you are guided when getting from one point to another. The BSC focus comes in four dimensions namely financial, customers, operational excellence and employees. To understand this better, you need to look at them one by one. For instance, in the operational excellence, you can compare this to your health. Our own health metrics are so important that we call them vital signs. In this case, the metrics will help us in monitoring our complete health. Knowing the value of the health metrics will aid us in driving success into our physical condition. Applying this in business, the diagnostic vital signs are the ones that impact the functions of the company.

Although you might think that the balanced scorecard is the only tool that you need to success, this is not true. Remember that BSC alone cannot guarantee that you will be able to attain good performance in your business. In this case, there is a need to use an overall performance management scheme. Metrics technology and other tools can aid here but the things that are really required here are metrics that are extended to the suppliers in the company as well as balanced metrics, measurement culture and process and process focused metrics that are aligned to the business strategy.

There are characteristics of the BSC that you should know about. This way, you can start building a scorecard that possesses those qualities. These include driving action and making decision and that it should focus on the measures that are vital yet few in number. There should also be a clear documented definition about the targets and the metrics. Lastly, it should be able to provide progress and should change over time particularly when the strategies change.
