Since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York, the United States had adopted tougher air travel security regulations for all its aviation thoroughfares. In particular, the US Department of Transportation had to impose immediate changes in response to the attacks. As a result, various airlines had to reduce the number of their daily flights suddenly, to comply with the new rules. Airport administrators had also been required to beef up their security protocols through the use of modern explosive detection systems and the observance of stricter passenger screening procedures. Through airport safety metrics, these security measures are then regularly evaluated to determine their effectiveness.

Airport safety or security is a vital concern for airport administrators and managers. This matter is critical due to the fact that a large number of people come to airports every day from different places of origin. Likewise, it is also imperative that airport authorities continuously improve their security protocols to keep up with the increasing demands for airport safety. The security and detection machines and equipment used should feature advanced capabilities to make them more effective in detecting restricted items like bombs, weapons, and potentially flammable items.

According to the Emergency Response and Research Institute, there are various aspects of airport operations that need to be looked into by concerned authorities. Among these is the lack of training of employees who are operating luggage screening systems. Usually, airport or airline authorities outsource these employees to perform essential security checks. Unfortunately, there is a high turnover rate for these jobs due to their low pay and rotten working hours. Because of this, only a few of these security personnel have gained extensive and relevant work experience. Aside from inexperienced employees, most of the screening gadgets used in airports are already outdated. Moreover, the sensitivity of some magnometers or metal detectors are adjusted and turned down as not to deter passenger flows. Another issue that plagued airport security is allegations that they are implemented in a discriminatory manner. Apparently, intrusive searches and interrogations were based on the race, ethnic origin, or religion of the traveler being screened.

For airports to become more protected against threats, the previously mentioned limitations and vulnerabilities of airport security should be immediately and effectively addressed. In addition, new security protocols should be implemented to yield maximum security benefit without violating the passengers' right to privacy. Airport authorities and airline management should also work together with the Federal Aviation Administration to fund training activities and to procure advanced security monitoring equipment. This way, the knowledge and abilities of airport security personnel will slowly become at par with that of terrorists. According to aviation security insiders, terrorists have become more sophisticated in the manner with which they do their activities.

The use of airport safety metrics, like the number of security checks, the number of screening equipment, length of time for security checks, and many others shall greatly help airport authorities design their security protocols. Moreover, they will function as indicators of success or failure, which would aid in the decision-making tasks of concerned individuals.
