The combined use of metrics, KPIs, and the balanced scorecard is essential towards the achievement of goals and objectives. There are different types of metrics that companies can consider investing on. For instance, there are HR metrics that are set up to check the performance of the HR department, if its progress is indeed aligned to corporate goals and objectives. There are also aviation metrics that place more focus on the operations of airline companies. However, if there is one type of metrics that all companies would benefit from investing, then it would be efficiency metrics. By definition, efficiency in any company connotes productivity, right? Then this should be a strong indication all on its own already. Various efficiency metrics can actually be used in measuring the present state of a company or organization, as compared against corporate goals and objectives. However, this does not mean that your company should take in and use all of these efficiency metrics for doing this would just defeat the purpose of using metrics in the first place. What you should do is just choose which metrics are relevant in terms of purpose. Using a limited number of efficiency metrics is even recommended all throughout industries today. One of the commonly used efficiency metrics is office work processing time. Office work time pertains to that period when employees are expected to work and be productive. For the typical 8-5 job, this period would then be the office work processing time to be measured. However, you cannot really expect all of your employees to be productive the whole 9 hours, with the exception of the 1-hour break, of course. There will definitely be a few minutes when your employees would not be as productive as they should be. Thus, this is one metric that you should pay attention to. Another efficiency metric to keep in mind is employee ratio. As much as possible, we want to cut on hiring and employment costs, thus prodding us to assign more work tasks to fewer employees. Employees would then have to multitask, which can actually be good for their skill sets, to some extent. The buck stops when employees are given too much work load or too many tasks that they can handle. This becomes unhealthy for the employees in general. If you want to achieve only the best in terms of metrics results, then these are just some of the efficiency metrics that you should pay attention to.
